ABACC Participates in the IAEA 70th General Conference

Representatives of ABACC participated in the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held from 15 to 19 September in Vienna, Austria. Throughout the week, the delegation took part in Conference activities and held meetings with partner institutions and officials.

On 14 September, ABACC met with the President of the Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control (KINAC), Dr. Na Young Lee, to exchange information on matters of mutual interest and receive updates on activities carried out by both institutions.

On 15 September, the delegation met with EURATOM Director of Safeguards Stephan Lechner and his advisers to discuss safeguards-related matters and cooperation between the institutions. On the same day, the delegation attended the inauguration of the Argentine and Brazilian stands, which was attended by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and officials from both countries.

On 16 September, ABACC Secretary Marco Marzo delivered a statement during a plenary session of the General Conference, highlighting the verification activities carried out by the Agency throughout its 35 years of existence.

On 17 September, a bilateral meeting was held between the ABACC Secretary and OPANAL Secretary-General Ambassador Juan Carlos Ojeda Viglione to exchange information on recent developments in the areas of disarmament and non-proliferation and to continue cooperation between the two organizations. On the same day, the 40th ABACC–IAEA Coordination Meeting was held, focusing on institutional cooperation, activity coordination and safeguards implementation, among other matters.

Concluding the agenda, on 18 September, ABACC representatives met with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi to exchange information on matters of relevance to the Agency and its relationship with the IAEA.

Participation in the General Conference reaffirmed ABACC’s commitment to international cooperation and to strengthening nuclear verification and safeguards activities.
